Temporary New York State Certificate for Teachers Displaced By Hurricane Maria

The New York City Department of Education welcomes teachers from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands who have relocated to New York City and are seeking a temporary certificate to work in our schools.

As of October 16, 2017, teachers who have been displaced as a result of Hurricane Maria can apply to the New York State Education Department for a Temporary Hurricane Maria certificate, which will allow them to teach in New York during the 2017-18 school year.

The temporary certificate will be valid until June 30, 2018, which will allow teachers to work for the remainder of the 2017-18 school year. The NYC DOE also encourages displaced teachers to pursue a New York State Initial teaching certificate through the existing reciprocity pathway once the temporary certificate is issued, because the temporary certificate will be non-renewable.
