Substitute Teachers: Substitute teachers cover classrooms on an as-needed basis when regular, full-time teachers are absent.

Paraprofessionals: Paraprofessionals are teaching assistants who provide instructional services to students under the general supervision of a certified teacher.

Pupil Personnel Services: Attendance Teachers, Counselors, Social Workers, and School Psychologists: Candidates interested in becoming a school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or attendance teacher in New York City Public Schools must hold or have completed all requirements for the appropriate New York State certificate.

Occupational and Physical Therapists: Therapists licensed by New York State provide occupational and physical therapy students to eligible children from ages 3 to 21.

Speech Improvement / Speech and Language Pathology: Candidates interested in becoming a speech pathologist or a teacher of speech improvement in New York City public schools must hold or have completed all requirements for the appropriate New York State certificate.

SLP Clinical Placements / Field Training and Practicums for Social Workers and Guidance Counselors: As of the 2017-18 school year, NYC Public Schools – Office of Human Resources School Support implemented a centralized system for the placement of all school counselor field training and practicum interns, social work field training and practicum interns and speech language pathologist clinical placement interns. This centralized system ensures that all internship (PPS student teaching) placements are aligned to agency protocols, including fingerprint clearance.

The clinical director/placement officer at your College/University should contact PPSClinicalPlacement@schools.nyc.gov to get the information required of them in order to be able to help you with the placement and clearance process.

Audiologists: Audiologists must hold a master’s degree in audiology from an accredited college or university, a New York State License in Audiology and one year of full-time paid professional experience within the last ten years to be eligible for audiologist positions in New York City public schools.

School Secretaries and Lab Specialists: Secretaries and lab specialists provide key administrative support within schools.
